The rich Nations and their promises

There are 192 Nations in the world, the richest 12 of which have 70% of all the wealth.

In 1970 the 22 richest nations promised that by 1975 they would be giving 0.7% of their annual wealth to help the poorest countries to develop. This promise has not been kept.

By 2008, 38 years later, the aid given by the rich Nations was 0.3% of their annual wealth.

The rich nations

In 2001 the 192 members of the United Nations signed up to the Millennium Development Goals, to be achieved by 2015.

These included the following targets:

  • to save half the people dying of hunger in 2015;
  • to save 66% of the babies and toddlers dying in 2015,
  • to save 75% of the mothers who die giving birth because they don’t have basic healthcare;
  • to give access to safe water and basic sanitation to half the people who need it in 2015.

As part of meeting this plan, the rich Nations agreed to increase their level of giving to 0.7% of their annual wealth by 2015.

By 2008, 7 years later, the aid given by the rich Nations stood at 0.3% of their annual wealth.
