There are approximately 7 billion people living in the world today.
Around 1 billion of these are living without access to the basic things they need to survive: sufficient food, clean water, basic healthcare, adequate shelter. These are the extremely poor.
A further 1½ billion are moderately poor, which means that they have enough to survive but no more than that.
None of these people live in the UK, the population of which has now reached around 60 million.
The means that for every person in the UK there are 16.67 people living in extreme poverty elsewhere in the world.
